Merry Chrismas – Ice Skating?

Ok, I know it’s not even Halloween yet but hear me out for a second. I’m actually doing a little test to drive a bit of traffic to the site. Not necessarily quality traffic but traffic nonetheless. Last year, I uploaded this post wishing everyone a “Merry Chrismas”. I hit publish and as soon as I did, I realised my spelling mistake in the title and immediately corrected it. However, the bots had already picked up my feed and the blog aggregators and search engines where pointing to the site with “Merry Chrismas” and not with the updated “Merry Christmas” as we all know it should be. The result was that anyone that mistyped “Merry Christmas”, was getting to me… I think I was top 3! I’d never be up there for the actual proper spelling but it was fun to get a lot of traffic from a mistyped popular phrase!

I also had another post about how crap the booking system were for the major ice skating rinks up in Dublin – Smithfield on Ice and 7up Christmas on Ice. I haven’t gone over to see if they have improved yet so there might be another rant about them later on! This also generated a lot of traffic to the site as these companies where spending a lot on traditional marketing, which had people searching for their names and related keywords in the search engines! Guess who was coming up?

So, where am I going with all this stuff? Well, it’s coming up to that time of year and as these keywords are seasonal, I thought I’d throw up this post as a bit of a test to see what traffic I can nab from people searching on terms like “ice skating dublin”, “smithfield on ice”, “7up on ice”, and of course “merry chrismas”. I’ll let you know how I get on but I’ll put it to some of my readers to try something similar in whatever area you like and see what traffic it generates. If you’ve got any suggestions or good stories, I’d love to hear them!

And just for the record… Happy Christmas! :D

Since the Smithfield ice rink is not happening this year http://www.dublincity.ie/press_news/press_releases/smithfield_ice_skating_event_cancelled_this_year.asp maybe you should direct people to the ice rink in Booterstown http://www.goskate.ie/
Or tell them about the “Dublin Corporation scum” http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=54369086 ;)

Funny post.

Tip : You should turn on permlinks on your blog if you are aiming to improve your SEO a little.

@Damien: I’ve modified your post into proper links for ya! Cheers for that. But if Smithfield on Ice isn’t happening, why is ticketmaster selling tickets for it?

@Paul: Cheers for the comment Paul. Permalinks are turned on but if you mean using the title of the post in the URI, e.g. davidbehan.com/blog/merry-christmas-ice-skating-anyone/ unfortunately I can’t do it on this server. It’s a windows box and doesn’t support htaccess. I’ve been too busy to move the site to my dedicated server that I have isapi rewrite on, but when I do, I’ll be going with this structure for permalinks. Nice site you have there btw! :D

Glad you like the site, I’ve been working to try and get it all organised, and I finally settled on a design I liked. My design skills aren’t as polished as yours though !

Merry Chrismas ! ;)

@Me: please elaborate? I actually think the new site looks well. The booking system is the same as last year but it is still usable. The &nsbp; errors on the home page still haven’t been fixed since last year.

Exterior lights and hallway lights are usually on timers and turn themselves off after 20 seconds or so. ,
