Get an iPhone on Vodafone Ireland

I finally did it. Earlier this week, I got a new iPhone. I was badly in need of a new phone for the past month as my old n95, drowned in a pint on a Saturday night out in Dublin. I temporarily tried using my old n73 and another entry level phone from Vodafone but just needed something with more power, features, email, mobile web, car kit compatible, etc. Vodafone couldn’t help me out with an upgrade because I’ve another 9 months left in my contract so I decided to look at my options [I should mention that they did give me 2 months free line rental because they felt sorry for me or something - about €160]. After using an iPod Touch since earlier this year, I really thought it was time to get an iPhone but how?

My Options

  • Transfer my number to o2 (as they exclusively sell the iphone in Ireland) but I had 9 months left in my contract so that was out.
  • Get a new number with o2 and have 2 phones – 1 for business and 1 for personal. Problem with this was that any time I called into either an o2 Store or Carphone Warehouse, they were never in stock and didn’t know when/if they would be.
  • Get it from the US but when I had a couple of my friends check it out for me on their travels, all those phones were locked down to the network.
  • Get a hacked iPhone on eBay that used iJailBreak or simable or another form of hack but the problem with this is that you can’t do firmware updates without the risk of apple locking the phone when re-activating it.

The Solution

After doing a bit of searching on eBay, I found out that certain countries were selling iPhones unlocked (or simfree) from their network. I did some searching around and it appeared to be true. A number of countries have laws in place that don’t allow Apple to lock the phones to a particular network, one of which is Italy. I did some more searching on eBay and I found a seller in Ireland that had some iPhones from Italy for sale. We agreed a price and I dropped down to Dublin to try before buying.

After unwrapping the packaging, I popped in my Vodafone sim, started up the iPhone and connected it to my MacBook’s iTunes. Apple did its thing and activated the phone. Later that night, I did a full firmware update and the phone re-activated with Apple – no hacks, no worries, no problems. OK, maybe a little bit of worrying while I was waiting those few seconds for it to activate but all was fine.

Setting Up iPhone for Vodafone Ireland

There wasn’t much to do to get the iPhone working with Vodafone Ireland. It picks up the cell information anyway so the phone works perfect. I just needed to get the right settings in for the 3G part. Under Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network I’m using the following information:

  • APN: isp.vodafone.ie
  • Username: vodafone
  • Password: vodafone

I also rang Vodafone to see if my data add-on package would cover requests going through this APN. It didn’t but they have a package for 1GB for €10 extra per month. I’ve added that on and it should be through on the next bill date.

Screenshots (click for larger image)

Here’s some screenshots that I took of the phone on Vodafone Ireland. Oh, to take a screenshot, hold down the power button on the top of the iPhone and press the home button once. The screen will flash and add the screenshot to your camera roll. I had to look this up online as the instructions that came with my iPhone are in Italian. That’s the only draw back but I can live with it.

Home Screen
Carrier Info
3G Settings

Conclusion

If you don’t want to go to o2 to get your iPhone, have a look on eBay for iPhones that are “legally unlocked” from Apple. They range from €550 to €750. The official price on Vodafone Italia is €569, as far as I remember. I paid €700 for mine, but sure I’m mad like this when it comes to gadgets. Still, I’m with Vodafone with all my free calls and stuff, I’ve got an iPhone and I’m NOT stuck in an 18 month contract with o2 on a worse price plan. I couldn’t be happier! I’m sure this process would work fine for getting an iPhone on Meteor Ireland or Three (3) Ireland. You’d just need to get the correct settings for those networks.

Hopefully this will help someone looking to get an iPhone that are not with o2 Ireland. I believe there is a market of around 2-3 million people in Ireland that are not with o2 and could want one. If anyone has any questions, don’t be afraid to ask.

Hi there,

Well done you, we were in Canade earlier and they were all locked to a network also.

Maybe its worth a trip to Italy…. now that i have a good reason to go.

October 10, 2008 @ 12:14 pm

isp.vodafone is the slower network
you should have it on hs.vodafone
should make a big difference

October 12, 2008 @ 10:41 pm

@pat do you use the same username/password with that? If you go through that APN will it be part of the data bundles that you can buy or do you need a specific one, do you know?

October 12, 2008 @ 10:57 pm

This is the actual APN of the vodafone dongle and is included in your data add-on
think password is vodafone
cant remember right now

I have got my 3G Iphone from states locked to ATandT network. I activated it in Ireland using original Sim which came with the phone. Then got it working on vodafone using turbo sim gevey 3g. I have entered these settings APN: isp.vodafone.ie
Username: vodafone
Password: vodafone
But for some reason it does not work, tried another settings I found on the web, still nothing. Any suggestions?
WiFi works fine. So what about those ads that 1 day costs you 1 euro when using the internet on your mobile. What settings are for this option? Thanks

I’m suprised that the isp.vodafone.ie settings have not worked. The other one for the 1 euro a day thing is live.vodafone.ie with dublin/dublin as the username/password as far as I remember. I think the isp.vodafone.ie only works with bill contracts while the live.vodafone.ie works with ready to go and bill.

Hopefully that helps you!

Another thing is GPS. It is working 1 time out of 10. It just basically says – Your location could not be determined. My firmware is 2.1 5F136. Tried to turn wifi on, disabling 3G -nothing. Hold phone outside for 15 min- nothing. I have downloaded Dublin map using wifi. Do you know the solution????
Thanks

I’m on the very cheapest Vodafone price plan (20 euros a month). Over 18 months thats 360 euros. If I buy an italian iPhone at say 700. thats 1060 for the 18 months.

Compare that to switching to o2 (which I know wasnt an option for you), thats 130 for the phone, and 45 euros per month on the cheapest price plan again. So in total over 18 months thats 940 euros.

The cheapest Vodafone price plan is inferior to the o2 plan. I’m sure if you look up the bigger price plans there will be differences without a doubt which for some customers may turn that around.

So when I was deciding if I wanted to go with the iPhone from o2 or getting my own one, I just concluded that it’s actually cheaper from o2 even without examining the risks involved in the other option. (Im sure this may not be the case for everyone).

please HELP
NIKKI.

October 30, 2008 @ 2:05 pm

@Nikki You may need to import your contacts from your sim over to your phone memory. Go into “Settings”, go down to “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”, scroll down to the “Contacts” part and tap on “Import SIM Contacts”. That might sort you out.

David,

Great post. I got an Italian iPhone from an Irish ebay seller. To be honest, I got it at such a good price that I thought something was dodgy – also came with a 3G iPhone dock too. It arrived today, had a few anxious moments as battery was completely dead and then hey presto – it works! All works fine on Vodafone just as you describe – couldn’t be happier – Vodafone plans, with free vodafone to vodafone calls are hard to beat – esp. when whole family is on Vodafone – a switch to O2 would have killed me!

Any chance you could pass on the item number/seller ID from EBay so I can see if the seller has any more?

Hi,
I’ve 2 fully unlocked 2G iPhones listed on eBay @
http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260311641145&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:IE:1123
or
http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260311637276&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:IE:1123

I can also get fully unlocked 3G iPhones (8GB) for €570 & (16GB) for €650 – I’ve been bringing in the 2G phones for a while-I swear by them!

With regard to the 3G on Vodafone issue…I reccommend you get onto Vodafone customer services…I spoke with them before and they had specific iPhone settings on the Q-T for us unlocked iPhone customers!
I personally don’t use cellular data on the phone and just stick to Wi-Fi as it’s pretty much everywhere I go!

The only problem with getting a factory unlocked iPhone from abroad is that the warranty is restricted to the country in which the handset was purchased. So if Davids’ phone has any “issues”, he would need to go to an Italian Apple store to get them resolved.

Also, Vodafone do not offer insurance on the iPhone either, so any loss/theft would mean the only way of a replacement would mean buying another iPhone.

There is also the issue of DOA (Dead on Arrival) iPhones. Imagine buying from Italy (via eBay) a brand new, factory unlocked iPhone, still sealed in the box. You open it up and try and try and try to turn it on, but the software is corrupt and you are left with an iBrick. I wouldn’t be a happy bunny!!

If the rumours are true, Voda are looking to offer the iPhone on their tariffs sometime in 2009. So, maybe better for those that are locked into contracts on other networks to wait around and see what Voda has to offer.

This http://networks.silicon.com/mobile/0,39024665,39407407,00.htm could mean the rumours of Voda getting the iPhone are true. The link states that O2 and Vodafone are looking to merge. Read for further details.

Shamnas,

Is you unlock the handset, you will not be able to update the firmware to 3.0 and get all the latest features. If you do try to upgrade after unlocking the phone, it will be locked out until somoene cracks the latest firmware for unlocking. Im guessing you did not use the o2 SIM card that came with the pay as ypu go phone. This SIM has free data and wifi usuage. If you are using a contract sim, then you need to get a web/data bolt on for about £10 a month I think.. Speak to O2..!

Looking to buy an iphone however I’m getting a bit worried with all these data add ons I’m reading about. Didn’t think I’d need those! If I buy an iphone (off ebay or whatever) & get it unlocked (not too worried about upgrading it as long as it won’t lock itself if I sync it with itunes)and I use my Meteor pay-as-you-go sim card will I be able to use the internet on this or will I have to sort out these add-ons I’m reading about?

@DJ You can fully upgrade the software. The phone is not hacked, it’s unlocked by Apple. There are a few places you can get the phone from: Italy, Hong Kong and Slovakia are ones I know about. You might want to check out this site as well: http://www.phonesonline.ie/Product.asp?ProductID=541 I think they are importing them in from one of these countries.

Hi David
Great blog.I have a contact in italy who is going to buy a 3gs for mee in 2 weeks when hes back off holidays.

Anyway, in the meantime, im looking for some guidance re charges, data add-ons etc.

Considering it fully unlocked, which is the best option to go with regarding avoiding high charges.I am currently with voda and have been for years. I have 10 months left on contract with them, and i am aware they will grease me for breach ( 10x monthly rate i believe) so…..what would you advise?

I will be using the 3gs for:
a few outgoing calls per day
sending and receiving around 5 e-mails daily
sending around 10 sms per day
light enough browsing, inc gmail, eircom net , sky etc

i have a headache exploring all this data lark, esp with voda who have confused me with their ” live internet” as opposed to “full “internet and have been advised by them i can get a 1gig data add on for 10 euro per month?
i could also go with porting to o2, but i have a headache trying to get around their charges / packages.

the most important thing is i want to keep my 087 number so , there in lies my dilemma.

i know you guys will advise well, so i appreciate your thoughts.

thanks

Hi,

Lucky you getting the new iPhone 3GS :D

You should be fine sticking with Vodafone. Get one of their perfect fit packages (or whatever they’re called), maybe the 200 or 400 one would do fine. Then get the 1gb data add on for 10mb a month.

I’m on Perfect Fit 600 with 1GB data add on and it works out good for me.

Hope that helps. Let us know how you get on and how much you get the phone for.
